About Me
Keeping your teeth young

As we get older suddenly we realised many things we didn't appreciate about being young - being fit, having smooth skin and having all your own teeth. As our loose teeth (and bridges) struggle to deal with chewier food we start eating bland mush and, there is no easy way to say this, OLD PEOPLE FOOD. I'm determined not to let that happen to me and I'm doing everything I can to keep my own teeth as long as possible, and when that's not possible to get the best possible teeth replacement. If you are like me and want to keep on eating whatever you want, I think you'll like my site. It's all about dental health and teeth replacement & maintenance.

5 Reasons Why You Should Consider Root Canal Treatment

Mabel Hicks

Root canal or endodontic treatment is a necessary dental procedure that aims at saving the tooth and relieving pain that may be associated with the tooth infection. The process is also vital in preventing bone loss in the affected tooth area. It is prescribed by a dentist if a tooth's pulp and nerve become inflamed, irritated or even infected. The process entails cleaning the interior part of the tooth, drying it and placing a filling. The following are some instances that may call for this procedure.

1.    Aggravated tooth decay

Cavities will occur when the bacteria residing in your teeth release acids that eventually start eating your enamel. If left unchecked, the situation will get more complex; it is easy for a minor tooth decay to turn into a deep decay. When this happens, there is a possibility of the tooth getting infected and falling off. Root canal is an important intervention if the decay if the decay has already affected the pulp.

2.    Tooth fracture

The sudden impact may cause a tooth to get fractured and chipped. In some instances, the fracture will get deep into the tooth and in effect will affect the nerves. In a case where such happens, and the fracture affects the structure of the gum, a root canal treatment has to be done. For the fractured tooth to be restored, a crown support is required, and this can be achieved through a root canal therapy.

3.    Tooth pain and sensitivity

Do you sometimes feel a sharp pain when chewing food? This can be a sign of an infected tooth. When sudden pressure is exerted on an infected tooth, sharp shooting pain is likely to occur. At times, you might as well experience sensitivity when consuming a hot or cold food item. These are symptoms that should be treated by root canal therapy.

4.    Repeat procedures

If a repeated dental filling has been performed on a single tooth, chances of it being subjected to a root canal therapy are very high. A dentist might perform repeated filling as a result of reoccurring cavities. This repeated procedure may substantially affect the nerves in the tooth necessitating a root canal therapy.

A root canal is not a complicated procedure and can be performed by a dentist in their office. You will be put under local anaesthesia during the procedure so you don't have to worry about feeling pain.  While root canals are costlier than a tooth extraction, you get to save your tooth.
